Misaligned core
As we have already seen, the assembly dynamics of the bimetallic planchets involves the union of the outer ring with the core inside a special monetary press. Sometimes, during the assembly phase, it may happen that the central disc is arranged overlapping or under the outer ring randomly, without leaving the striking area at the time of minting.
The result of this anomalous coinage is a sought-after error in jargon called “fried egg” by collectors.
The degree of error varies according to the small distance of the core from the edge of the coin. Various degrees of this error are known, from the slightest overlap up to the total overlap of the core (E.T.25, E.T.26 and E.T.27). The closer the core is to the edge of the coin, the greater the interest on the part of the collector. In very rare cases, the overlap can also involve the edge of the coin. Coins that exhibit this assembly error are highly sought after by collectors.
