Die clash
In modern money presses, the minimum distance between the two dies is adjusted in such a way that they do not collide, even in the absence of a planchet. However, it may happen that due to an incorrect adjustment or a malfunction of the monetary press this minimum distance is reduced to zero. The collision of the dies can occur in the event that the planchet is not fed inside the ferrule at the time of minting. Consequently, both surfaces will be imprinted with the images of the opposite die. If the dies were not replaced immediately after the collision, the press would continue to strike coins which consequently would present, in addition to the regular images, some traces in incuse and in inverted position on both sides. Thus, at the moment of contact of the two dies, a single or multiple collision can be generated, depending on the repeated malfunctioning of the monetary press. In very rare cases, a collision may occur combined with other striking errors, such as a rotated collision (axis of the coin shifted) or a misaligned collision (with axis of the coin misaligned). In these cases the images in incuse and in inverted position will appear displaced according to the previous and wrong setting of the dies. Normally when the two dies collide, they are analyzed, extracted and sent to the competent office for a possible repair which, in most cases, consists of a deep polishing aimed at slightly smoothing the surface of the die to eliminate traces of the collision. During the polishing operation of the dies it may happen that the surfaces are not polished properly and that these are in any case reused to mint further coins.
