Cracked planchet
Crack or fracture occurs when there are impurities in the alloy that cause weakness along the entire length of the planchet.
This defect can also be caused by a poorly mixed alloy or by a lack of or incorrect annealing of the non-minted planchet (the combination of these factors presents another possibility).
A cracked planchet is defined as such when it has developed a crack before, during or after minting. In the case of cracks that form before minting, the edge and neighboring ridges often show slight anomalies, while the latter two circumstances actually produce a broken coin.

The crack of the planchet always develops along the vertical plane or along the strongly oblique plane and starts from the edge in the direction of the opposite side of the edge. This defect always occurs on both sides of the coin. In case you notice a crack on only one side of the coin, it would undoubtedly be a surface lamination crack.

Usually, breaking into two distinct sections occurs after the coin has entered circulation, but this is not a rule of thumb.
